Your record stays with you.
As U Wish was built so that a list of everything you own could live on your own phone and nowhere else. Here is exactly what that means — and the two or three places where it is not the whole story.
The short version
- Your record of what you own — every item, photo, video, voice note, value, and the name of the person you have chosen — is stored on your phone or tablet. We cannot see it.
- There is no account to make. No sign-in, no email address required, no password.
- Two things can leave your device, and only when you ask them to: an Up for Grabs family link that you create and send, and the audio of a recording if you ask for it to be written out as a transcript.
- We run no advertising, use no analytics or tracking tools, and do not sell or share information about you with anyone.
The rest of this page is the detail behind those four sentences, including the places where the picture is not quite as simple.
What stays on your device
All of the following is written to storage on the device itself:
- Item names, descriptions, categories, rooms and locations.
- Photographs and videos you take or add.
- Voice notes and video messages, including a message recorded about the home itself.
- Who you have chosen to receive each item, and any note you left for them.
- Estimated values you enter.
- Reports and memoranda you generate.
None of it is copied to a server of ours, and there is no screen anywhere that would let us look at it. That is a design decision rather than a policy — we did not build the ability.
It has one consequence worth understanding plainly: if you delete the app, or lose the device without a backup, that record goes with it. This is why the app encourages you to print or export your memorandum and keep the paper somewhere sensible.
What leaves your device, and only when you send it
Up for Grabs is the one feature that places anything on a server, and it happens only when you deliberately create a link and choose what goes into it.
When you create a link, two things are uploaded: the names of the items you selected, and small thumbnail images of their photographs. That is what your family sees when they open it. Items you did not select are not included, and neither are your voice notes, your video messages, your values, or your choices about anything else in the house.
Anyone holding the link can open it. It does not ask them for a password, because the whole point was that your sister should not need to create an account to see what is available. Treat the link the way you would treat a spare house key: send it to the people you mean to send it to.
You can close the link whenever you like. Closing it stops the link working, for everyone.
We keep those item names and thumbnails no longer than the link needs them. If you want them taken off the server straight away, close the link and then write to asuwishcustomerservice@gmail.com — tell us enough to identify the link and we will remove them.
What the server sees when someone opens a link
To deliver a page at all, our server records the ordinary information every web server records: the internet address the request came from, the type of browser, and the time. We do not use it to build a profile of anyone, and it is not combined with your inventory, because we do not have your inventory.
Those records are kept only as long as they are useful for keeping the link service running reliably and looking into faults or abuse, and they are not used for anything else.
Voice notes, video messages and transcripts
Recordings are made and stored on your device. When you print or share a report, recordings are attached as clearly named files, and where a transcript exists the words are printed on the page as well — so the paperwork carries your meaning even where paper cannot play audio.
Writing a recording out as a transcript needs an internet connection, because the audio may be sent away from your device to a speech recognition service to be turned into text. That is the one occasion on which a recording can leave the phone, and it happens only when you ask for a transcript. We do not receive the audio ourselves and keep no copy of it.
If you would rather nothing at all left the device, simply do not make a transcript. The recording still plays in the app, and it still travels with your report as an attached file — only the typed-out words would be missing.
What we do not do
- No advertising. No ads in the app, and no advertising identifiers collected.
- No analytics or tracking. No usage-measurement tools, no third-party trackers, no session recording.
- No selling or sharing. We do not sell, rent or trade information about you, for any purpose, to anyone.
- No mailing list. Because there is no account, we do not hold your email address unless you write to us yourself.
If any of that ever changes, it will change on this page first, with a new date at the top. We would rather tell you plainly than let you discover it.
Paying for Premium
Premium is a one-time purchase made through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Your card details go to Apple or Google and never to us — we do not see them and could not store them if we wanted to. The store simply tells the app that a purchase was made, so the features unlock.
Apple and Google each have their own privacy policies covering that transaction, and theirs apply to their part of it.
Your device's own backup
If your phone or tablet backs itself up to iCloud or to Google, your As U Wish records may be included in that backup, in the same way your photographs and messages are. That backup is yours and is governed by Apple's or Google's terms rather than ours.
It is worth knowing about for two reasons. It is the one copy of your inventory that may exist somewhere other than in your hand — and it is what would let you restore everything onto a new phone.
Children
As U Wish is meant for adults making decisions about their own belongings. It is not designed for or directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from a child.
Your choices, and your rights
Because your record lives on your device, most of what privacy law calls your rights you already hold directly, without asking anyone:
- To see everything we hold about your belongings — open the app. That is all of it.
- To correct it — edit any entry, at any time.
- To delete it — delete the item, or delete the app.
- To take a copy with you — print or share a report.
For the one thing that is not on your device — an Up for Grabs link — close the link in the app, or write to us and ask us to remove it. Tell us enough to identify the link and we will take care of it.
Depending on where you live, including under Canadian, European and several US state privacy laws, you may have further rights, such as asking for a copy of what we hold or complaining to a regulator. Write to us and we will deal with it properly.
We answer requests of that kind within thirty days, and sooner where we can.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. Where a change is significant — anything that alters what leaves your device — we will say so in the app rather than only here.
How to reach us
Write to asuwishcustomerservice@gmail.com with any question about privacy, or to ask us to remove an Up for Grabs link.
If you need a postal address — to make a formal privacy request, for instance — ask us and we will provide it.
